1.What made you decide on your venue?

We knew we wanted to hold our wedding at a hotel as we had a lot of out of town guests coming into DC. We toured several properties, but immediately upon meeting with the Conrad staff and seeing the venue, we knew it was the right choice. The aesthetics and modern vibe of the hotel fit with our vision for our wedding day. Additionally, the team was so incredibly warm, inviting and flexible with questions and ideas that came up throughout the process. I would 10/10 recommend the Conrad to anyone looking for a hotel venue in a great area of DC. 

2.What was your inspiration for your wedding theme/style?

We wanted our wedding to be modern, but timeless. We chose decor in white, black and neutral champagne colors knowing that we would never get tired of looking at those colors in our wedding photos.

3.What were your must-have elements for your wedding?

Good music, good food and good drinks! We fell in love with our DJ (DJ Michael Ramos from District Remix) because he understood and shared our love for EDM music and well as early 2000’s hip hip/R&B. The Conrad also had a wonderful menu to choose from and we were able to select several craft cocktails that were some of our favorite drinks. We added passed espresso martinis during the dancing part of the evening, which were a hit. It was fun to incorporate so many of the things we love into one evening, and to see our friends and family enjoy those things too. 

4.What was the best part of wedding planning?

The best part of wedding planning was exploring new places around DC, and sharing ideas with my now husband. It was fun for us to discuss all the vendors, details and ideas we had, really allowing us to envision the big day. I also really enjoyed the opportunity it brought to plan and hang out with my sister Rachel (my Matron of Honor). I really appreciated her insight and ideas, and she really kept me grounded throughout the process. 

5.What was the hardest part?

The hardest part was knowing that many of our friends and family wouldn’t be able to make it for various reasons. While our guest list was much smaller than anticipated, we took a glass half full approach throughout the planning. Due to the smaller size of our wedding, we were able to upgrade several elements of the wedding (i.e. those passed espresso martinis!) and get more time with each of our guests.

6.What helped you handle any wedding related stress?

Exercise and self care is always a priority for me, but it became even more important throughout wedding planning to help me manage my stress. Additionally, our wedding planner Brielle, was invaluable in helping me navigate decisions as well as prioritize tasks. It’s easy to get analysis paralysis during wedding planning, so having something or someone to help you get to decisions faster is very necessary. 

7.If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

My favorite moment was during our ceremony, where we were surrounded by our family and friends. We decided to hold our ceremony “in the round” which made the ceremony feel so intimate and special. 

8.What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready?

I couldn’t have made it through the day without my family. It was special to have my parents and all of my siblings present for our wedding, and included in the wedding party. We felt overwhelmed with all of the love and support we received from each one of our family members, and we will never be able to thank them enough.

9.What made you choose MAB Artistry to be your HMU team?

I found MAB Artistry listed as a recommended vendor in the Washingtonian Wedding Magazine. However, they were also recommended by my planner and other vendors as well. Norma and Ebonie were so wonderful to work with. They are both kind, fun, and encouraging. I’m so thankful for their patience with me and also the feeling they gave me on the big day. I still get so many compliments on my hair and makeup, and appreciate all of the support I received from the MAB Team!

10.What advice would you give to other brides planning their weddings?

Go with your gut on certain decisions, and remember that the most important thing is you’re marrying your partner. All the other parts of the wedding (decor, etc.) is just icing on the cake.

What made you decide on your venue? 

While we’re both from the Northeast, we’ve lived in DC since 2018, so we knew we wanted to get married here. There are so many stunning venues in the city, but we wanted something modern and eclectic…a rooftop would be an added bonus! We found all of those things in The LINE Hotel in Adams Morgan, DC. At The LINE, we could get ready and hold each of the day’s events – ceremony, cocktail hour and reception – in one convenient and gorgeous location. 

What was the best part of wedding planning?

Working with our incredible planner, Laura Held, and watching her bring our ideas and inspiration to life. Coming up with a theme and aesthetic that was the perfect representation of us as a couple was a challenge, but so much fun! Plus, all of the vendor meetings and mockups were fantastic…connecting with those vendors on floral and decor inspiration was an absolute highlight. 

What was the hardest part?

Decision fatigue is real! We were engaged for over two years, so we spent those two years planning. While it was wonderful to have the extra time to enjoy the planning process, it was definitely tricky to stay motivated in the last couple of weeks to get everything done! 

What helped you handle any wedding related stress?

Envisioning the end result of finally being married, seeing all of our plans come to life and having the time of our lives with all of our family and friends at the wedding!  

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

Definitely the cocktail hour! It was on The LINE’s gorgeous rooftop, and it was so fun to see all of our friends and family coming off that *just married* high! 

What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready?

Music definitely sets the tone for us. Making sure that we had the best music at every stage of the day was super important to us. Between our getting ready playlists, to the vibey Cherry Blossom String Quartet at the ceremony and cocktail hour, to DJ Craig knowing how to keep everyone on the dance floor all night, music set the tone for the day and made it all the more special.

What made you choose MAB Artistry to be your HMU team?

MAB came highly recommended by our planner, Laura. We’re a two-bride couple and had lots of bridesmaids. We knew we needed a big team to help us bring to life the different visions we both had as brides and our respective bridal parties. 

What advice do you have for other brides?

If you can, do a first look. Not only did it take away those pre-ceremony jitters, but we were able to get all of our portraits done early and we were able to fully enjoy our full rooftop cocktail hour with our loved ones!

What made you decide on a destination wedding? How did you pick your venue? 

Deciding on a destination wedding was influenced by Covid-19 and difficulty finding a United States venue that met all our needs. We looked up a lot of different venues in various countries. The two that we were between were in Greece and Spain. The Spain venue had never hosted a wedding before, so we went to Amanzoe in Greece to see if it was as beautiful in person. It was more than beautiful, and I finally had the “aha moment” of knowing exactly where I wanted to get married (on their beach).

Was it difficult finding/deciding on local vendors?

My wedding planner Anna Sourbati of Event Co did a phenomenal job with recommendations of local vendors. It was not hard to decide on them, because she was so knowledgeable and knew exactly what was needed. The only difficulty sometimes was the language barrier, and Anna helped with that.

What was the best part of planning a destination wedding?

The best part of planning a destination wedding was traveling there and soaking in the gorgeous scenery. Tasting the local food and beverage was also really fun. I also really enjoyed getting to know my wedding planner more. Bonding over our shared love of astrology was wonderful. It was really fun to brainstorm all of our favorite things, from our favorite music preferences to food, dress codes, and twinkly lights.

What was the hardest part?

The hardest part was finding a henna artist for my special Moroccan henna in honor of my late grandmother Arlette. I wanted to find someone who could write Hebrew and also knew how to do lavender designs and hamsa designs as well as all of the other elements that I wanted to include like hearts and traditional Moroccan patterns.. It took at least seven interviews, a ton of emails and calls, and Instagram DMs to find the perfect person. Toni Bluestone. She created the most gorgeous design ever, and it was so special. I got to wear my grandma’s Hebrew name Simha on me for my wedding day.

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

One of my favorite moments from my wedding day was our first dance. We practiced it for months and months, so finally being able to perform it together and have so much fun in front of our families and friends was so special. If I could pick more than one moment, it would also be hearing my husband’s vows. One of my favorite parts of his vows is “I vow to grow old with you, and let our skin weather from a life of adventure, perseverance, and a million smiles shared together”, as well as “I vow to love and cherish you every minute of every day, and not let a sun set or rise without reflecting on the divine beauty of your being and soul” .

What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready?

One thing I couldn’t do without at my wedding was probably music. From the fun getting ready music, to the dance floor music and walking down the aisle music, I think it really sets the tone and makes everything more fun.

What made you choose Makeup By Ana B/MAB Artistry to be your HMU team?

I chose Makeup By Ana B because we have had an artist/client relationship together for a long time. I am so happy that I had Ana B as my HMU team. I felt so beautiful and so glamorous on my wedding day and the three days leading up to it.

What advice do you have for other brides?

If the person that you really want is booked, ask that person for recommendations of people who do similar work to them. This is how I found my videographer and how I found my henna artist. Sometimes you might even end up with someone better than the other person who gave you the recommendation.

WHH, Whatever Happens Happens. It seems a little hard to keep that in mind during the process, but it will definitely make things less stressful. 99% of the things that you worry about before the big day will all go out the window. You forget all about it and just enjoy the moment. They say it goes by fast, and it really, really does.

You will be in the hair and makeup chair a lot, so stick with someone that you love and trust.

Take a few minutes after your ceremony to soak in being husband and wife. If you want to practice your first dance in your wedding dress, I recommend doing that too for a little. Have a little food, sip some champagne, do whatever you need to do before you go see your family and friends.

Our April MAB Wedding Highlight is back in DC, but with a couple that had to do some of the planning after moving out of state to Colorado. MAB Bride Simay and her husband Josh created a chic and magical wedding that blended two distinct cultures with the help of Laura Held from Ida Rose Events. 

What made you decide on your venue? 

We knew we wanted a venue in DC, the city where we met, and a venue that spoke for itself without having to add a lot of extra decor. We got engaged in Paris and when we visited the Anderson House we knew it was the one. We didn’t even tour any other venue. Anderson House is effortlessly beautiful and makes you feel like you are transported to another place, like Paris. It is truly one of the most magical venues in the city. 

What was the best part of wedding planning? 

The best part was planning an event that was uniquely ours and ours only. We had so many special moments sprinkled into the design and the day-of that were for important to us. Our wedding was the coming together of two cultures (Turkish and American) so we were sure to add aspects that highlighted my Turkish heritage. I think we challenged the catering team a little with those unique requests and they handled it all with grace and excellence. Another example of decor that was uniquely ours is that we made our escort display out of luggage tags because we love traveling and the tags were also the wedding favors for our guests. Since then we have traveled many places with family and friends who attended our wedding and seeing our luggage tags on their bags brings us so much joy. 

What was the hardest part? 

The pandemic. We had to reschedule our wedding from May 2021 to October 2021. It was worth the wait but the process of rescheduling all the vendors and finding a date that worked for all of them was an incredibly stressful process. We couldn’t have done it without our wedding planner, Laura Held. 

How was planning your wedding in DC from Colorado? 

We started the process while we were living in DC but moved to Denver soon after. It was important to us that we had a wedding planner we trusted because she was our eyes on site. 

You’ve had to deal with a lot of uncertainty because of COVID-19. What helped you handle the stress of not knowing how it might impact your wedding? 

The number one thing that absolutely helped relieve stress was having a wedding planner who I trusted to help us navigate through this unique time and who I knew would ensure it would be the most perfect day for us when the time came. Laura Held and her team deserve all the credit! 

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day? 

My favorite moment was our first dance. I really wanted to dance to a traditional, difficult, and intimate Turkish folk dance but I had never done it before and it was not like I could find a Turkish dance teacher in Denver to help us. So my husband and I learned the dance by watching YouTube videos and practicing together.  I was very proud and happy to show a piece of my culture to our friends and family. Props to my husband, Josh, for his willingness to learn and for impressing our guests!

What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready? 

Having a team of vendors who understood our vision and collectively brought it to life. I especially would not have given up the touches of Turkish culture that we embedded into our wedding. Having a planner and a caterer who respected the cultural intricacies, and who had to figure out some unconventional tactics to serve Turkish Raki and Turkish coffee, was key. 

What made you choose Makeup By Ana B/MAB Artistry to be your HMU team? 

I had seen MAB tagged in many of the weddings I liked while searching for inspo on IG and I just liked how MAB consistently made brides’ look naturally beautiful and glowy. I first worked with Uzma for my engagement photoshoot and I was absolutely in love with the dewy makeup she did for me. I knew we were going to vibe well through this process! 

What advice do you have for other brides? 

My advice for couples planning a wedding is to think of what truly matters to them and focus on featuring those things on their wedding day. This day is about you and your relationship so your wedding should be the highlight of the things that matter to you. Three more things: get yourself a wedding planner you vibe with because it is absolutely worth it, interview/meet with vendors before choosing and booking them, and find a venue that does not need a lot of dressing up to be beautiful.

We’re going out of the country for our next MAB Wedding Highlight! MAB Bride Emma and her husband Collin, had a micro wedding during the height of covid, but didn’t give up their dream of having their destination wedding. Read on for more about this incredible destination wedding in romantic Mexico.

What made you decide on a destination wedding? How did you pick your venue? 

We always knew we wanted a small destination wedding and we’ve traveled to Cancun multiple times for family trips. We found the venue through our planner, Laura with Grit & Grace. We saw the other weddings she planned there and knew it was perfect. The venue fit our design/theme so well, not to mention the service and staff is incredible!! 

Was it difficult finding/deciding on local vendors?

Most of our vendors were from the U.S. however there were a few we selected locally. The floral/decor, hair & makeup for my bridal party, and the welcome bag vendor. 

What was the best part of planning a destination wedding?

We really wanted it to feel like a vacation for everyone. Especially after postponing our wedding due to COVID, the most important thing was spending time with our closest friends & family. Doing a destination wedding allowed us to limit our guest list and have four full days of activities/events to offer our guests. 

What was the hardest part?

A common answer but COVID. Things were changing constantly and I was worried about the borders shutting down or new mandates being put in place.

You had to deal with a lot of uncertainty because of COVID-19. What helped you handle the stress?

Our friends and family, and of course lots of wine 🙂  We were fortunate enough to get legally married and host a micro-wedding in DC on our original date which made it feel special despite the circumstance. Our family & friends went above and beyond to make it feel as normal as possible, a “fake” bachelorette party, multiple surprises, and even a wedding video with best wishes from our family members that weren’t able to be with us in 2020. We felt so lucky to be supported and surrounded by these amazing people in our lives!

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

My favorite part was surprising our guests with a choreographed first dance. My husband and I are not dancers but thanks to the help of our friend, she put together a simple yet amazing dance routine. 

What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready?

Our wedding planner!!! Laura from Grit & Grace. She truly made the whole thing a magical experience, despite COVID, changing vendors, etc. 

What made you choose Makeup By Ana B to be your HMU team?

I worked with the team for my micro wedding so I was familiar with the work and style. I also had a very specific look in mind for myself when it came to the wedding which was full glam and I knew this team could achieve that. Laura reached out to Ana last minute after I was unsatisfied with my original hair & makeup trial and Ana jumped right in. I had my trial scheduled within a week of reaching out to her and I feel so lucky that Ana was available!!! She completely understood my vision for hair & makeup. On the day of the wedding, Ana was there for touch-ups to make sure I looked flawless in all of our pictures even though it was 80 degrees. She truly went above & beyond as my makeup artist and I can not recommend her enough!! 

What advice do you have for other brides?

Hire vendors you trust!! You want to enjoy every moment of the day because it goes by so fast.

It’s the new year and we’re back to highlighting some of our amazing MAB Brides. Charisma and Cole were married back in 2020 during the height of COVID, but after having to make changes to their original plan, their wedding day was just as beautiful as they hoped. Read on for more about Charisma and Cole’s wedding; from their tear-jerker first look to her fun Bride jacket!

What made you decide on your venue? 

Initially I had a different venue for our larger wedding. Because of COVID, we decided to have a smaller wedding and cut our wedding list down to just immediate family and our wedding party. Since our wedding became smaller, we realized our original venue was too big for such a small, intimate wedding. We talked to our wedding planner and she recommended The Virginia House. We went on a tour and instantly fell in love. I’ve always dreamed of getting married in a castle and that’s pretty much what we did. 

What was the best part of wedding planning?

The best part of planning our wedding was having something fun to do together and look forward to. I enjoyed trying on wedding dresses, especially styles that I didn’t imagine myself in. My husband, Cole, really enjoyed the food and cake tastings – of course! 

What was the hardest part?

The hardest part was planning a wedding during a pandemic. We wanted to make sure we were being safe and smart. We went back and forth between canceling our wedding, eloping, or having an intimate wedding with our family. I am very glad we chose to have an intimate wedding because it was an absolute dream. 

You had to deal with a lot of uncertainty because of COVID-19. What helped you handle the stress?

During the pandemic, we had to make a lot of hard decisions and uninvite so many people – which was not fun at all. Our wedding planner, Jamie Flagg, really helped us through it all. Without her, I would have fallen apart. She handled all of the logistics, answered all of our questions, and really put our minds at ease. 

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

My favorite moment was our first look. It was such a beautiful, sweet, and romantic moment. It also helped get out of those butterflies before walking down the aisle in front of everyone. Plus, the video is a major tear jerker! My husband had the SWEETEST reaction.

What is one thing you couldn’t do without at your wedding? From planning, a special feature at your wedding, or while getting ready?

We had a live band at our wedding which was the best. There’s nothing like live music. They also sang our proposal song, which my husband co-wrote, for our first dance. It was so special. 

What made you choose MAB Artistry to be your HMU team?

I really fell in love with MAB Artistry when I ran across their Instagram page. My wedding planner sent over a list of HMU teams and I was instantly drawn to MAB Artistry because they had pictures of minority brides. It was important for me to find someone who was experienced with doing POC makeup. 

What advice do you have for other brides?

Breathe!!!!!!!! Wedding planning can be very overwhelming and it’s important to destress throughout the process. Delegate!! Whether it’s your wedding planner, family, or bridal party, it is important and helpful to have others help you out with planning. It’s you and your partner’s wedding! Remember to do what you want on your special day. There will also be someone who will give you their advice on what you should do but at the end of the day, it’s not their wedding. Lastly, enjoy every minute of your wedding. It goes by SO FAST, so take in as much as you can.

We’re so excited to highlight another MAB Artistry bride on the blog! It’s so exciting getting to see all the pictures of our brides excited and celebrate their wedding with their spouse, family and friends. We normally only get to see our brides and her bridesmaids and never the ceremony or reception, so we’re beyond excited to share these moments of some of our brides.

Our next highlight is Caroline & Patrick and their classic DC wedding!

What made you decide on DC for your wedding? Why the Mayflower?

I grew up in the Northern VA/ DC area and it was where Patrick and I met and started our relationship.  We loved going out to baseball games, restaurants, and shows in DC.  The Mayflower was the best wedding venue because it was in such a great area of DC! We had a lot of out of town guests who wanted to tour DC and see the sights! 

The ballroom in the Mayflower is beautiful, historic, and has all the great gatsby vibes! 

What was the best part of wedding planning?

The best part of wedding planning was the details- the florals, linens, plates, tablescapes!  Dance lessons were so fun too!

What was the hardest part?

The hardest part was COVID and the uncertainty.  Changing our wedding date was disheartening as well- but everything worked out in the end!

You had to deal with a lot of uncertainty because of COVID-19. What helped you handle the stress?

Knowing a lot of things were out of our control and we just had to stay positive. Patrick and I just continued to enjoy our engagement period. 

If you can pick one, what was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

Our first dance!  Patrick and I took dance lessons and practiced a lot! The dance truly showed our teamwork! 

What made you choose Makeup By Ana B/MAB Artistry to be your HMU team?

Ana B was reasonably priced and had great reviews!  Ana and her team were flexible and cooperative when we had to change our wedding date – this was greatly appreciated during such a stressful time!  Her team was also open minded and very creative. They truly listened and took their time and showed they cared.

My hair and makeup trial was close to 4 hours! I felt so cared about that she took 4 hours to make sure I was going to be happy with my bridal wedding day look, which was MUCH appreciated! 

What advice do you have for other brides?

Have fun and enjoy it!  It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and celebration to plan your wedding!  Have fun, don’t stress, and don’t worry about other people’s opinions! DO you and your fiance! Have fun, enjoy, and Be a little selfish! It’s your day!
